While bigger and more detailed reports of the Philadelphia's return
were published in the Philadelphia newspapers,
the event was even noted
in the New England press.
In the summer of 1945 the Philadelphia escorted the
cruiser Augusta with President Truman aboard to the Potsdam
Conference. On the
return
trip on August 6th, just
a few hundred
miles
out
of Norfolk,
the President
made his historic address to the American people reporting the atomic
bomb strike on Hiroshima, Japan.
