June 2011
The Versailles Palace
We spent an entire day at Versailles which consists of much more than one building
To walk the extensive grounds some people even rent golf carts
The opulence of the palace is well known
Below is the chapel where the royal family and friends worshipped

Below is the Hall of Mirrors - mirrors were quite a luxury in the 18th century

The grounds contain a mile long canal so the Royals could pretend they were on the gondolas of Venice
Statues were commissioned in the classical style to imitate the ruins of Greece and Rome

For a "simpler life" Louis had his and hers "country houses" constructed on the property
Even in the "country houses" there was no lack of luxury

More reflections of classical construction
Since Queen Marie Antoinette missed the rural life she knew in Austria, a recreation was constructed for her. It was actually a working farm

Storks, swans and their babies flourish in these surroundings

At left is the historical statue of Louis XIV

Below is one of the modern scultures around Paris
all contructed of rusted iron

I wonder what Louis would have thought of these?
