100 foot clifts towering over a small rocky beach below were considered impregnable by the Germans
They concentrated their defenses on an expected inland assault
On June 6, 1944 three companies of the 2nd Ranger Battalion scaled the cliffs using rope ladders
They suffered 70% casualies and held off 5 German counterattacks before the area was secured.
