We
have been to Naples twice before - both on land trips to visit
nearby Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius |
|
|
A difference perspective when arriving by cruise
ship |
|
|
My
Dad described this in his WWII Diary |
|
|
|
|
|
|
In
1944 the harbor was busy with warships and Mt Vesuvius was erupting
A very difference scene today
|
|
Several cruise ships are docked this morning |
We walked around the port |
|
|
This castle once defended the port |
|
|
|
I bought this postcard. My Dad did this too
in 1944 |

One

This one is still being used for services

A
former palace has been renovated |

a restaurant |

Back Onboard - Time to Leave

|
As
we left Naples, I could see the Isle of Capri in the distance
Dad told me about visiting there during WWII

Mount
Vesuvius towers over Naples |

Remembering
June 2019 when Joe & I hiked Vesuvius
with children and grandchildren

Arrow: Joe got that far
Right Arrow: The rest of us got to the top

From my Dad's WWII Diary
March
22, 1944 - "Good Afternoon Shipmates",
"Some day your grandchildren
may be asking you questions about Mt. Vesuvius and what you
saw these past three days"
This was the prediction of the Chaplain of the WWII Cruiser USS Philadelphia
during one of his addresses to the crew
as they watched Mount Vesuvius erupt while at anchor in the Bay of
Naples
One goal of our 3 generation family in 2019 was to hike Vesuvius |
The
last trek to the top |
That's
the bay where Dad watched the eruption in 1944 |
|
|
When
it was finally safe to go ashore, Dad bought some postcards |
|
This was the castle
at the port in 1944

Leaving Naples |

We
sailed past the Isle of Capri |
