Sailing the open sea again |
Malta is the small island below
Sicily |
Valletta
is the Capital
In 2019 we
traveled to Rabat by bus
Just
as Dad did in 1944
This "Surprise" Cruise gave us
a different perspective of Malta
We spent 4 days on this island nation in 2019
visiting the sites my Dad wrote about in his WWII diary
That trip is documented HERE
In
2019 I was also able to recreate the photos (like the 2 below)
that my Dad took during the war
He spent 1 month here while his ship (USS Philadelphia) was being
repaired after damage at Anzio
Our
4 days exploring Malta were wonderful but this visit gave us
a different view
Now I can see the Grand Harbor of Malta as
my Dad saw it when sailing here in 1944 |
We have tested NEGATIVE!
No more Hazmat bags for trash and laundry
We can leave our cabin, roam the ship
and go ashore. I bought a Malta hat
I bought a new toothbrush
The Grand Harbor has been well
fortified since ancient times |

Memorial to the War Dead |
The Victoria Gate |

The arrow points to our hotel room in 2019 |
The
Barraka Gardens is the recognizable archway structure
A row of cannons directly below, still
fired for tourists, once defended the harbor
The other side of the harbor |
Boats
of all sizes dock here |
Cruises
ships have replaced the warships of WWII
There
is a dry dock for repair just as when my Dad's ship was repaired
here in 1944 |
