9 Cities were discovered in the strata of the site of Troy

Click HERE for a complete chronological description
of the 9 Cities of Troy

Here is Homer's City of Troy and the
fertile land surrounding it

The Trojan War was described in poetry
and
in decorated pottery

In Classical antiquity episodes from the Trojan War
frequently appeared in poetry and in vase painting.

In every period the changing perception of war and warriors
was reflected in the visual representations.

In the Archaic period the Trojans and the Hellenes
were depicted with similar clothing and hairstyles,
worshipping the same gods.

After the Persian War in the early 5th century BC,
this style of vase painting changed.

The Trojans were presented as Oriental in art and literature,
looking almost indistinguishable from the Persians

The museum contains numerous artifacts from all the 9 cities at the excavation site
These provide an insight into thousands of years of history

In 1871 the world of myth met scientific exploration
when a German archeologist Heinrich Schlieman
was given permission to excavate the site

A goal was to locate the legendary Treasure of Troy
thought to date to the gold hidden by King Priam
after the fall of the city

These photos are evidence that treasure was indeed found and
removed from the country for display by Schlieman to
friends and family

History is unclear as to how this happened
The Polyxena Sorcophagus

The 8th and 9th cities on the site of Troy
confirmed that the Romans traced their origins to
the Trojans as described in Virgil's Aeneid
