The town was destroyed in 1902, when the volcano Mount Pelée erupted, killing 28,000 people. The entire population of the town died, as well as people from neighboring villages who had taken refuge in the supposedly safe city There were only 3 survivors. One was a prisoner found in a jail cell in the basement of the prison
About 4,000 people live in the town today but the ruins stand as a reminder of its tragic past
