Ushuaia,
the capital of Tierra del Fuego province,
(Fireland)
lies on
the Beagle Channel
on the main island of the archipelago
at the southern tip of
South America
First settled by missionaries in the 1870s,
it became known
for the prison built there
by Argentina between 1902 & 1920
The prisoners built the jail
and the railroad access themselves.
The prison became
the symbol
of Ushuaia’s
colonization.
It was closed in 1947 |
