Chilean Fijords & Glacier Alley(2020)
Index
South America
February 2020
Charles Darwin documented this area during his voyage of discovery aboard the HMS Beagle (1831–1836)
He described how the “beryl blue” color of the glaciers here
contrasted with the foreboding landscape of rock, mist, and steel grey water.

We sailed the fijords of Western Chile, in native culture
"the place where the land disintegrates"

Glacier Alley is located to the west of the port of Ushuaia
(the border of Chile & Argentina) along the Beagle Channel

There are 5 internationally named glaciers in Glacier Alley: Holland, Italy, France, Germany and Switzerland
As we passed the magnificent scenery, the cruise director provided historical and geographic commentary
Sailing within the Beagle Channel
We saw the brilliant blue colors contrasting with the grey surroundings
that Darwin described nearly 100 years ago
One hour later still within the Beagle Channel

Only one glacier still reaches the sea. The others no longer do
This is "Devil's Island" named by an explorer who saw the campfires of the natives
and imagined the island inhabited by devils
