Punta
Arenas in southern Patagonia is the capital city of Chile's
Magallanes & Antartica Chilena regions.
Overlooking the Strait of Magellan, it is
a starting point for expeditians and cruises to the Antarctic
Originally named "Sandy Point" by John Byron in 17th
century |
According
to our guide the native word
was "place where the land disintegrates"
|
The
native term is understandable looking at the map

Catholic
missionaries were a large part
of the region's history
Attempts to save natives from slaughter by soldiers
sadly
led to their death from diseases
spread by their new European clothing
There are no descendants from that native tribe
in the present day
