Ahu Tongariki a platform and stand of 15 Moai
Index
South America
February 2020
The most iconic stand of Moai, especially at the time of the year when the sun rises directly behind them
We arrived at Ahu Tongariki in complete darkness to watch as it happened

Looking back from the shore, we can see the remains of an ancient Rapa Nui village below the volcano

We both were taking all kinds of pictures from multiple angles

Here Comes the Sun!

The few people in the photo provide a sense of the enormous size of the statues

These aren't Moai, just a group of tourists

Sunrise from a different angle

We stayed at this location long after sunrise for a very important reason

Only when the sun is in a particular position
can you see the petroglyphs that
remain from the native village

The remains of a native dwelling

We returned with our guide mid day for more information and different perspectives

Including this photo - Note: we are nowhere near the Moai, it is just a matter of perspective. We respect the rules

Sebastian provided more detail of the Moai
from different angles, front and back
