Sculptures depicting the medieval history of Speyer

The imperial cathedral in Speyer (the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Stephen) was completed in 1061





The sculpture outside the cathedral depicts the scene in the Garden of Gethsemane when Jesus is betrayed by Judas



Although this is our 3rd time in Speyer, it is the first time we found the Cathedral open to visitors In 2017 there was a funeral service for Konrad Adenaur, the German statesman

Speyer is part of a "Camino de Santiago". The Palatine Ways of St. James (German: Pfälzer Jakobswege) those sections of the Way of St. James in the Palatinate region of Germany and part of the historic pilgrimage route to the northwest Spanish town of Santiago de Compostela. The statue was placed so that from a certain spot in the main square the pilgrim would appear standing in the door of the cathedral Today that spot was taken by tables of people outside a cafe

Trinity Church, the oldest of the 5 Protestant Churches in Speyer has a very ornate wooden interior
