In
a corner of Burg Square there is a small building which houses
2 churches on separate levels
The
lower chapel of St Basil
remains
in the original Romanesque style
as it
was built in the 12 century
According to legend following the Crucifixion Joseph of
Arimathea wiped blood from the body of Christ and the cloth was
preserved.
The artifact was kept safe in the Holy Land until the
time of the Second Crusade when King of Jerusalem Baldwin III
gave
it to his brother-in-law, Count of Flanders Diederik van de Elzas.
The Count then took the relic back to Bruges where it sits in the
upper chapel of the Basilica
The Upper Chapel was rebuilt in the 16th Century
The
Side Altar is the Location of the Daily Exposition of the Holy Blood
Relic
Since
the start of the 14th century a procession
is held every year on Ascension Day
(the day
Jesus ascended into
heaven) recreating the arrival of the vial in Bruges
