This cathedral is hailed as Antoni Gaudi's best work and finest masterpiece.
It is located in the Eixample district and construction began in 1882 according to the neo-Gothic designs of Francisco de Paula del Villar.
Only a year after construction began Gaudi took over, he took a more Modernista approach to the project which became his life work.
Construction continues to fulfill Gaudi's plan of 18 towers and 4 facades. 8 towers and 2 facades are currently complete
The goal is to complete the project by 2026

The two completed facades are the Nativity Façade and Passion Façade; they are adorned with motifs taken from nature and Baroque decoration.
The Passion Façade features Jesus' Crucifixion. The two other remaining facades are the Glory Façade (under construction) and the façade on the south side of the church.

The construction itself was fascinating to watch
At left a huge block is being lifted into place

Below work continues on the pinacles of the towers

The pillars in the nave resemble thick trees and the ceiling is a remarkable vaulted structure where the "branches" of the trees meet.

Each column is sculpted to resemble a particular type of tree that grows in the area
