Appian Way Latin
(Via Appia Antica) was, the first and most famous of the ancient
Roman roads, running from Rome to the coastal city of Brundisium.
It was begun in 312 BC by the censor Appius Claudius
Caecus.
The cobble stones still bear the ruts made by Roman Chariots

Along
the road you can see the remains of Roman tombs. Tombs were not
allowed within the Roman Wall
Many are in ruins, but those of several of the wealthest citizens survive and
are being restored

Our destination was the Catacombs of St Sebastian
Thousands of Christians were buried here in caves where
pagans were buried in previous centuries
