Index - Europe
June 2019
Appian Way Latin (Via Appia Antica) was, the first and most famous of the ancient Roman roads, running from Rome to the coastal city of Brundisium.
It was begun in 312 BC by the censor Appius Claudius Caecus.
The cobble stones still bear the ruts made by Roman Chariots
Along the road you can see the remains of Roman tombs. Tombs were not allowed within the Roman Wall
Many are in ruins, but those of several of the wealthest citizens survive and are being restored

Our destination was the Catacombs of St Sebastian

Thousands of Christians were buried here in caves where
pagans were buried in previous centuries

Photos were not allowed. The picture to the right is from the Internet

These catacombs have several levels

The tour of the Catacomb ended at the Church of St Sebastian
