We walked through the old town area of the city with our guide Emil
who was a participant in the protests against the dictator
Ceausescu which led to his downfall within a week
People gathered at this corner on December 15, 1989 to listen to a Hungarian priest
who was about to be deported for his opposition to Ceausescu
This plaque documents this first gathering
The Museum of the Revolution includes
a section of the Berlin Wall
Victory Square in December 1989
Looking toward the Cathedral
Looking toward the Opera House where leaders
of the protest addressed the crowd
The Museum includes a Chapel and Memorial to those who were killed in the 1989 protest

The names and pictures of those who died
are memorialized in the chapel
They ranged in age from 2 to 76

Today Victory Square is a peaceful scene with a memorial to those who died in front of the Cathedral
The Opera House where we attended the Opera commemorating the events 30 years earlier
