Built
between 1914 & 1917 by brothers Frank and Ed Lee,
this structure
pre-dates the railroad camp of the early 20s
It was originally used as a supply station for goods delivered via the Susitna
River
and destined for miners working the Cache Creek Gold District nearby
The "Roadhouse" designation became official in the mid 1940s |

"CHRISTMAS in AUGUST"
This unique celebration began in the early
20th Century when a group of tourists
were stranded by a blizzard
in Yellowstone National Park on August 24th
They kept up their spirits by singing carols
and the tradition
spread to other National Parks and surrounding tourist areas.

As
we drove south from Talkeetna, the devastation of the wildfires was
visible along the road
This is why the road was closed to traffic until a few days
ago
We could see a few places still smouldering |
|
Crews were still busy with cleanup |

Talkeetna is
a base for many tourist "FlightSee" planes
We considered
booking one of these to see Denali and glaciers from the air
BUT
tourist flights
were curtailed to prevent congestion in the skies
and interference with fire fighting aircraft |
