Anchorage, Alaska(2019)
Nature Trail
Index
Alaska & Spokane, WA
Aug-Sept 2019
This beautiful trail winds along the coast 11 miles from downtown to Kincaid Park
Along the way interpretive signs describe the region's natural and human history
Our goal was mile 6 just beyond Earthquake Park
The trail parallels the tracks for the Alaska Railroad for 1.2 miles
while passing precariously close to the shores of the Cook Inlet
At low tide the mud flats are visible between the trail and the water
These are serious warnings.
The mud flats behave like quicksand trapping unsuspecting hikers
Here comes the train to Seward
Tomorrow we will be on this train
The trail continues this way
This lagoon was restored so salmon can swim into it and spawn

Combining Astronomy and Nature
The trail also features a portion of The Anchorage Light Speed Planet Walk, a scale model of our solar system
Taking the walk, you experience the relative size of the planets and their distance from the Sun.
The scale was chosen so that a leisurely walking pace mimics the speed of light.
On this scale, each step equals the distance light travels in one second (300,000 kilometers or 186,000 miles).
This is the SUN in downtown Anchorage
About 6 miles further, we are at Saturn
Looking ahead
Looking back at the city where we started
Finally our destination - Earthquake Park

Then came the Tsunami!

It was a long walk inland to find a place for lunch. This is "The Rustic Goat"
We were saved from a 6 mile walk back to downtown by Public Transit
FREE for senior citizens!
Back at our hotel planning for tomorrow
The train station is directly below our hotel
