Our first impression of Estonia
Even the roadside rest stops have good desserts
and
their language includes VERY long words
|
We will explore beautiful Old
Town tomorrow |

The view from our hotel room |
Even parking lots have an artistic flair |

Music
was the glue that united the Estonian people during the
brutal oppression
of the Soviets, followed
by the Nazis and then the Soviets again.
The film "The Singing Revolution" describes how (1987-1992) hundreds
of thousands of Estonians gathered publicly
to sing
forbidden patriotic songs and share protest speeches risking their
lives for independence.
In the face of determined opposition by the thousands
of Russians who had been settled in Estonia
by the Soviet Union
to subjugate the native population,
the people persisted and freedom
was ultimately gained without the loss of a single life |

This
concert venue is the site of an National Music Festival
begun in 1869 |
This
100th Anniversal Memorial included
the planting of 100 Oak Trees |
|
|
This sculpture of a hero of the music revolution
is lovingly situated
as if he is a member of the audience enjoying
the concert.
I believe that in spirit he still is. |

Looking
out into the Gulf of Finland, this sculpture was originally a
memorial to an aviator who lost his life
there
but has come to symbolize all who died at sea |
